The Future of Star Twix Nails

Mar 31st 2024

Star Twix Nails is a Harajuku and Kawaii press-on nail shop that offers custom designs to those who enjoy alternative fashion. As much as we envision ourselves becoming a household name like KISS USA, we still have a long way to go. So here is our origin story and the lucky break that got us to today. Hopefully, we can win the hearts of all the nerds and geeks as we strive for greatness in this beauty industry.

2020

Star Twix Nails started amidst the pandemic. She is a pandemic baby, a brainchild spawning from boredom and talent. I, as the creator, wanted fancy embellished nails but had no budget to do so. Nail salons could not capture my ideas the way I would have wanted. Oddly enough, Nail techs were not on my radar at the time. I looked inward and decided I could do my nails just as well as anyone else. Of course, that was a lie. My nails sucked in the beginning, but it was so fun learning a new art form. I adored wearable art and expressing myself through a tiny canvas. From there, I practiced on all my sisters and explored different types of nail art early on.

Tip: Practice, practice, practice, learn, learn, learn.

2021

2021 is when I realized I could make money from my art. Art has always been my dream career path, but nothing seemed as possible as press on nails. At 17, I spent beyond $3,000 of my savings and created a business. This process was interesting, to say the least, because I learned about DBAs, sales tax, accounting, and all the hard work it takes to run a business. This was also the year I decided to switch my college major to business at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). I received and shipped more than 50 orders in 2021, resulting in a proud moment. Navigating this by myself was very difficult, but I am happy I did this work early on.

Tip: If you want to own/create a business, pick a business major or take a few business classes. The connections you make in business college are valuable.

2022-2023

Welcome to my gap years. Nothing significant happened during these years. I was attending in-person classes with a six to seven-class course load. On top of that, I was vice president of communication in my organization, Goolsby Leadership Academy. Also, I was working 30-40 hours a week to afford my independent lifestyle. This is all to say that it is ok to take a break. Sometimes, life won’t go in a straight path, and you have to prioritize what is most important. For me, a college education was a milestone for furthering my business.

2024

You may be asking what is different about this year. Well, I got my lucky break! I competed in a business competition called Mav Pitch at UTA and won the semi-grand prize of $15,000. That is a lot of money, but I’ve been waiting for a moment to throw everything I have into my business. I like to say I’m lucky, but preparation is needed to seize the opportunity. I worked hard, and it paid off in the long run. In August of 2024, we are competing for an additional $25,000! Pray for us!

What’s next? Star Twix Nails is planning for a full-scale launch with new products. We are preparing for a virtual launch on multiple marketplaces, digital campaigns across media platforms, and in-person selling at our local venues. We will get our nails as close as possible to shoppers and provide excellent service to our audience. We want to teach fashionistas about the beauty of wearable art and how to utilize press-on nails for all occasions.
